Jaw Expanders have several benefits: enlarging the upper jaw arch, eliminating crowding and protrusion, providing a wider smile, and preventing the unnecessary extraction of teeth. Although upper jaw arch expanders have been utilized for the past century, lower jaw expanders are relatively new in the last 10-15 years. Dr. King was the first orthodontist in Virginia to use this technique. The technical name for this procedure is “distraction osteogenesis”, or D.O. The benefits are the same as those cited for the upper jaw expanders. Although this new technique can not be used in every patient, Dr. King can evaluate your teeth and jaws, to determine if you are a candidate for this procedure. Although this technique is simpler for children, it may also be used on adults. The “before and after” pictures that appear on this page help to demonstrate the dramatic jaw expansion effects.
